Xenia, Apprentice

Technical product designer

Hi, I'm Xenia, I'm 22 years old and I'm training to be a technical product designer at AAT Alber Antriebstechnik GmbH. I am currently in the first year of my apprenticeship at Dreieinhalb. My hobbies are handball, reading and drawing.

Which departments within the company have you passed through so far, and which are next on your list?

In general, I'm always assigned to the R&D (development) department. But you also have a lot of discussions with the workshop and are allowed to get a taste of what the daily routine in the workshop is like.

Since starting my apprenticeship, I've also spent two weeks in production and repairs. There I got an insight into how our wheelchair drives and stair climbers are built. I was also allowed to assemble the frames for the patient and load transporters myself. After assembly, we always check that everything is working smoothly. In the repair department, I was able to see how our products are repaired and new parts replaced.

What makes training at AAT special for you?

Definitely the cooperation with my department, because there is always something to laugh about. There is a very informal atmosphere in the company. Everyone helps when help is asked for.

How can we imagine one of your typical working days?

I arrive at work at 7:00 in the morning. I either start by finishing my tasks from the previous day or I start new tasks. At the moment, I'm working on a task for a colleague that will keep me busy.

Would you tell us a bit about the course of your training in relation to the company and school lessons and how the two areas can be combined?

A lot of drawing is done at school, which I also often need in the CAD program (computer aided design) here at work. I also have materials lessons, where we talk about the composition of different materials. How they are used and what needs to be taken into account.

Have you already thought about what you would like to do after your apprenticeship?

No, unfortunately not yet. Only that I would like to continue working as a technical product designer because I really enjoy the job.

What tips do you have for anyone who is also interested in an apprenticeship here?

  • Bring an interest
  • Be open to new ideas
  • Ability to communicate
  • Willingness to learn

Always be open to new things. You will learn a lot and receive a lot of input, especially at the beginning of your training - never let this unsettle you.
